Let us discuss the L Arginine Bodybuilding Facts and whether you should be taking this as a bodybuilding supplement or not. There is much discussion and even speculation within the industry, as to the viability of using l arginine as part of a bodybuilding regimen. But are there really benefits to using this, bearing in mind the body produces its own?
Being a non-essential amino acid, it is sometimes beneficial to consume it as a supplement. This is more of a choice for bodybuilders and athletes, rather than the average person. There are different sources of l arginine out there and some of them are listed below
- Dairy Products
- Whole Wheat
- Red Meats
Another thing to remember, is that L-arginine is also classed as a semi-essential amino acid. What this means, is that it isn’t really required in a “healthy” diet. Where as other essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals are.
What are l arginine benefits?
There are a few l arginine benefits, but first let us look at what is l arginine. L arginine (arginine) is a chemical building block or “amino acid” that is used during the biosynthesis of proteins. During its process in the body, it is converted into Nitric Oxide (NO). This chemical Nitric Oxide allows the blood vessels to open wider. When this happens, blood flow is improved. Something important for bodybuilders and athletes.
As it is important and necessary for building proteins, there are some benefits of l arginine and we will talk a little more about them in this article. L arginine also stimulates other substances in the body, such as growth hormone and insulin.
But here are some of the main l arginine benefits and why it is used:
- Heart and blood vessel conditions
- High blood pressure
- Improving kidney functions
- Muscle building and athletic performance
- Erectile dysfunction
- Muscle mass development
- Congestive heart failure
- Vasodilation and endurance
- As a bodybuilding supplement
- Immune system boosting
L arginine for muscle mass development
While the body does produce its own l arginine through various dietary sources, taking it as an l arginine supplement can beneficial. I wouldn’t say it is the best bodybuilding supplement, but it does have its purpose.
There is a risk of consuming too much, as there are many supplements out there, such as pre-workouts, creatines or protein powders that have l arginine as part of their ingredient make up. What would be beneficial, is to work out your l arginine dosage and tolerance. This can be done by starting off with the lowest dosage and taking notes of the effects and or side effects. Increase your dosage until you have worked out your maximum daily intake.
Because l arginine is needed for protein synthesis, it contributes to the development and growth of muscles. Along with this, l arginine also encourages the release of GH (growth hormone), promotes fat metabolism and signals muscle cells.
The idea behind this is lean muscle mass development with minimal fat increase. Strength increase is also noticed by certain individuals. However, this is not the primary effect of l-arginine. But as part of a bodybuilding diet plan for mass, it can be effective.
Immune system development
As l arginine works on a cellular level, it is also known to eradicate free radicals. On top of that, it is also known to play an important part in increasing the effectiveness of the cells in the immune system.
It can also be effective for the prevention of colds, improving kidney functions and athletic performance. As the body is placed under repeated stresses from continuous physical activities, it is sometimes more prone to immune system breakdowns.
Taking l arginine as a supplement can help with preventing this and keeping your body functioning correctly throughout your bodybuilding workout routine.
Vasodilation and endurance
This is an important part when it comes to bodybuilding and following a bodybuilding routine. Nitric Oxide play a very important role in the correct and effective function of blood flow. Something every bodybuilder knows is vital to their training.
L arginine promotes muscle conditioning and muscle endurance, by lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow to the muscles. Why is blood flow to the muscles extremely important? It is important because it means that vital nutrients and oxygen are supplied to your muscles in greater volume and for increased lengths of time. When muscles are worked, they tear on a microscopic level. This is perfectly normal as this is how the repair process starts and muscle development begins. But is important not to damage your muscle during this process. This is where l arginine is helpful. It can help reduce damage to the muscles, while providing peak training performance and promote healing.
So, is l arginine a good supplement for bodybuilders?
In my opinion I think l arginine bodybuilding supplement is. Providing your l arginine dosage is correct. I did mention above that you should workout your maximum intake, but this is because there isn’t a set la arginine dosage per day. Try to look between 2 and 25g per day. Bear in mind, there is or may be l arginine in other supplements you consume. So, check this first.
There are some side effects associated with l arginine and these are listed below:
- Abdominal Pain
- Blood abnormalities
These are more on the milder scale of the side effects list, as there are more serious ones such as;
- Death or serious illness in children or infants
- Difficult controlling blood pressure during surgery
- Increased risk of death after a heart attack.
There are mixed l arginine reviews, with some saying to stay away from it, while others promote its used. I myself, supplement my diet with L-arginine, but in small doses. I could probably and safely take more, but I only use up to 5g per day.
By working out what your dose is, you will be able to consume the right amount per day with maximum effect and minimal side effects. It is always a good idea to first check with your doctor or physician about any existing conditions you may have before taking it as a supplement. Just to make sure you aren’t suffering from anything that can contradict the effects of l arginine.
I would also recommend cycling your l arginine. Like any supplements, continued use should be avoided or at least regulated. You could monthly cycle your l arginine, but taking it for one month, then discontinuing it for a month.
Taking l arginine for ED (Erectile Dysfunction)
You probably didn’t think it could help for this did you. But it does have its place. L arginine becomes Nitric Oxide and as we know NO helps with increased blood flow in the blood vessels. When this happens, more oxygen-rich blood circulates through your arteries. For a normal and healthy erectile function, healthy blood flow is required to the penis.
So, this one of the good l arginine benefits for men and l arginine for ed (erectile dysfunction). It can be consumed as a powder, or as l arginine tablets. There have been extensive scientific studies on l arginine as a possible stand-alone treatment for erectile dysfunction and other conditions. The results have not been conclusive, although it is a generally safe supplement, it won’t help to restore healthy erectile function.
My conclusions on l arginine bodybuilding facts
Understandably there are still many questions that go unanswered regarding the usage and l arginine bodybuilding supplementation. But there is also enough information to substantiate the benefits of it, providing it is used in moderation. Prior checks should be done before consuming it to ensure you are not putting your body at risk by consuming it.
It is also important to note, that those taking l arginine for bodybuilding purposes, will differ from one another. Someone starting out with a bodybuilding workout routine, versus someone that is at professional level will require different amounts of it and at different l arginine dosage intervals.
Some answers on forums could be from someone that requires a much higher dose than you or doesn’t have any medical conditions preventing the consumption of it. Everything you read should be a guide but use your discretion when it comes to the consumption of anything. It is your body after all. But my opinion on taking l arginine as a supplement is it is good. There are many different brands that sell their own version. But at the end of the day, finding the right one will be something you will need to do on your own.
